Ionia Flight Equips Emerson School for Science
By Shawna Hoekstra

After months of preparation, Phase 1 of our Unit’s long term Emerson project has paid off in happy smiles.

Ionia flight learned through one of our Unit members that Emerson Elementary school did not have any science equipment.  Since one of CAP’s mission is to bring STEM education into the local community, the Unit decided to equip them for their current science classes rather than give them CAP curricula for Aerospace Education (AE).

“The unit agreed it would be the perfect use of the Walmart Local Giving Grant and Air Force Association Grant money we received in 2013,” said the Unit Commander, Capt Michael Hoekstra.

SM Heather Hillabrandt and Capt Michael Seiloff, the Unit Aerospace Education Officers, met with Emerson Faculty and Staff to assess how our Unit could best assist them with their current program. The teachers gave them a list of needed equipment for their classes. Within a short time, all of the equipment was located at such low prices that we were able to purchase all of it rather than just the few items planned.
The Unit AE staff and Finance Committee received input from all of the Unit members, and a joint decision was made to make the purchase.

“Science education can be dramatically enhanced with hands-on experiments. Learning science should be fun,” said Capt Michael Seiloff.

Ionia Flight looks forward to a continued relationship with Emerson School to enhance their science education through more activities.

I would like to thank the Sunset Memorial Gardens staff, members of VFW Post 12082, members of Ionia Flight, and families and friends of our Veterans.  This year was once again a great success.  Your support has brought us closer to achieving our goal of placing a wreath on every Veteran memorial stone at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Summer in the City 2013

On 21-22 JUN 2013, members of Ionia Flight set up a Community Relations / Recruiting booth at the Summer in the City festival on Main Street in Ionia.  A replica of Dr. Robert Goddard's first liquid fueled rocket, built in 1926, was on display.  Some modern examples were on display as well to demonstrate how rocketry has evolved to what we see today.  A radio controlled Cessna 182 was also on display to show visitors what CAP uses in its Emergency Services missions.  The highlight of the day was definitely the Stomp Rockets!  Children below the age of 10 were able to launch small rockets by stomping on an air bladder.  Ionia Flight looks forward to coming back next year!  In the meantime, another booth will be set up at Ionia Bertha Brock Park for the Ionia Fall Fest this year!
